Who He Is
Olusegun Obasanjo is one of Africa's most consequential statesmen. A soldier who served in the Nigerian Civil War, he became Head of State in 1976 and, three years later, did what few leaders on the continent had done before him: he handed power to a democratically elected civilian government and returned to his farm.
Two decades later, Nigerians called him back. Elected President in 1999, he led the country's return to democratic rule, negotiated historic debt relief and rebuilt Nigeria's standing in the world.
Since leaving office he has served as African Union High Representative, mediator in conflicts across the continent, farmer, author, and founder of a foundation devoted to health, education and agriculture.
